This is a comprehensive thread documenting every detail uncovered from the GTA VI leaks. The information below is sourced from The GTA VI Document (v1.6), compiled by the extended mapping and r/GTA6 Discord communities as well as GTAForums. This thread is structured as an evolving reference — not speculation, but a catalogued breakdown of what was actually found in the leaked footage and code.

To be clear: the leaks were a terrible thing that should never have happened. We stand with the Rockstar employees who were most affected. Still, the community dissected every frame, and this is the result.


What Was Leaked on September 18, 2022

The original September 18 leak consisted of:

  • 90 video clips spanning from under 10 seconds to over 3 minutes, with recording dates from March 2021 to September 2022
  • 2 PDF screenshots related to camera controls and build previews for developers, from "Camera-Americas-v6"
  • Python code related to the game menu (see the Python Leak section below)
  • "GameHeaders_Tasks" C++ code containing information about various game AI tasks, with references to GTA V features
  • Vehicle handling data from GTA V's source code

What was leaked on September 18, 2022 — overview from The GTA VI Document


RAGE Engine Notes

The leaked footage reveals several technical details about the game engine:

Tweaked Euphoria physics can be seen when enemies fall or the player jumps and ragdolls. The lighting and skybox systems from Red Dead Redemption 2 are present, including volumetric clouds. Heavy fog appears in one clip where Lucia is in a shootout with police — far thicker than anything in GTA V, with visibility reduced to just a few meters ahead.

Some clips use low-detail character models labeled "low_int." Character labels in the debug are numbered based on story stage. Every world event has a set of rules the player must fulfill for it to trigger, including conditions like "isPlayableCharacter" (PlayerLucia or PlayerJason) and "isWantedRule." Green dots on the right side of each world event indicate which conditions are met.

Protagonists

Characters overview from the leaked footage — Dre, Lucia, Sam, Jason, and supporting cast

Lucia — One of the two protagonists. The "Bonnie" of the Bonnie & Clyde story structure reported by Jason Schreier. Possibly a hacker, based on the tools she carries (Tracker Jammer, Immobilizer Bypass, USB Drive, Auto Dialer). Her height is 5'3" (160cm).

Jason — The other protagonist. The "Clyde" of the story. In a confirmed relationship with Lucia, as evidenced by the diner clip. His height is 6'1" (185cm).

Supporting Characters

Billy Tit — A close friend of Dre and a DJ at the nightclub. On thin ice after insulting Dre for not bringing his drinks. Dre tells him "this is why no one likes him" and considers firing him.

Kai — New contact.

Wyman — Character connected to car parts collectibles. Has a rant event and initial meeting event in the world events list.

RB Shaw — New contact.

Zach — Unknown role.

Mentioned Characters

Gangs

Three gang factions have been identified:

San 4 San — A Haitian gang. They have a hood with a drug house, gas station, and thrift store in Little Haiti. Events reference their territory extensively.

Guardia Brothers — They have a hideout in North Vice City.

Far Right Militia — Referenced in the event list with a progression: Far Right Militia Training → Trucks Only → Final Visit, plus a Survival Compound First Visit. It's unknown if they'll be an active gang or a group you encounter while exploring, similar to the Klan in RDR2. Trailer 1 confirmed gangs are marked in green in the event data.

The leaks reveal a wide range of items the player can carry:

Hacking/Theft Tools: Auto Dialer (automatic calls for fraud/technical purposes), Immobilizer Bypass (hacking luxury vehicle immobilizers by matching codes on a PDA, similar to GTA: Chinatown Wars), Slim Jim (for unlocking older car doors — can't open newer cars with internal defenses), Tracker Jammer (prevents GPS tracking devices from receiving/transmitting signals, possibly used to evade police), USB Drive, Cut Off Tool, Crowbar.

Weapon Wheel Evolution

The weapon wheel went through multiple iterations during development, visible across several clips:

June 2021 version — Split into three sections: Weapons, Equipment, and Gear (similar to RDR2's Weapons, Items, and Horse sections). Large weapon capacity.

September 2021 version — Nearly identical to the June build.

January 2022 version — Significant redesign. Players could hold different weapons in each hand, with an additional quick item inventory at the bottom left for consumables (trauma kits, pills, cigarettes, food). Weapon capacity now limited.

June 2022 version (latest seen) — Dual-wielding removed. Quick inventory moved to center left. Weapon capacity still limited. Based on weapon positions, you can carry approximately one assault weapon on your back, one handgun or semi-auto, one or two smaller melee weapons, one or two tools/items, and an empty-hand "unarmed" slot.

A health tip was also spotted: "You are injured. Your health will regenerate slowly, open your Weapon Wheel and use a recovery item to replenish your health faster."

Open World Activities

Confirmed activities include: Dice (possibly Jason-exclusive based on event parameters), Golf, Fishing, Races, Scuba Diving.

Van Shipment robberies — Delivery van events spawn near industrial areas of Port Gellhorn. Garages in the zone have security camera warning posters, suggesting stealth is required.

Robberies — Significantly expanded from GTA V. The Hank's Waffles robbery clip and pawn shop clip suggest robberies are available at many locations including restaurants, pawn shops, cargo containers (possibly Jason-exclusive for containers), gas stations, and more.

Deliveries — Events for Port Gellhorn deliveries and pickup warehouse missions exist.

Vehicle trunk searches — Events for finding something or nothing in vehicle trunks.

Enterable Buildings

A massive feature of GTA VI is the number of enterable buildings. Debug code from one clip reads: Interior:157/ss15lok_1_gfa_bespoke Room:1/room-Main — meaning at least 157 interiors were in the game at the time of the leak.

Confirmed enterable locations include: Malibu Club, Pawn Shops, Jack of Hearts Strip Club, Supermarkets, Bars, Restaurants (including Hank's Waffles diner), Apartments, Laundries, Gas Stations, Convenience Stores, Liquor Stores, and many more.

Multiplayer and enterable buildings — 157+ interiors confirmed


Multiplayer

In one clip's bottom-left corner, the text "PL: 2/32" is visible — indicating two players in a 30-player lobby (with two spectator slots, similar to GTA Online and RDO). "SH: PR_RSN1" references the script host, and "GM H: PR_RSN1" references either the session host or game master.


Collectibles

Two collectible types have been identified:

Wyman Car Parts — Includes Classique Logo items. These have a circle icon indicating all collectibles and pickable items use a circle indicator. They also have a "DYNAMIC" flag suggesting they can be movable.

New Mechanics

These are mechanics not present in GTA V, some carried over from RDR2, others entirely new:

Cover and Movement: Walk while in cover, go prone, switch shoulders while aiming, underfire (covering your face with weapons or bats, works while crouching).

Loot System: Jason and Lucia both carry duffle bags. In one clip, Jason opens shipping containers with options for "stash gold" and "stash cash stack," putting items into his duffle bag. Players pick up cash one-by-one rather than instantly.

Combat: Grappling during fist fights, downed self-suicide and downed self-revive (option to revive yourself after heavy damage, similar to RDR2 horse revival), ability to drop and pick up weapons.

Partner System: Buddy Comms, Buddy Ping, command your partner during robberies (the Hank's Waffles clip shows prompts to "check in with Jason" or "hold for more options," including telling Jason to surrender or follow you). Jason and Lucia can share items between them — shared items tend to be weapons they can't equip, duplicate weapons, and consumables split evenly.

Eagle Eye System: Like RDR2's Dead Eye variant — possibly Jason's special ability. Used to highlight items of interest such as jewelry, safes, and security cameras.

Money Laundering — An icon in the Hank's Waffles video tracks to a car wash property: a washing machine with a dollar sign in the center, the universal symbol for money laundering. Properties can apparently be purchased for laundering purposes.

Fences — Car Fence and Art Fence are both mentioned in the events list. Iris is connected to an Art Fence introduction event.

Purchasable Businesses — Likely linked with the laundering system.

Vehicle Discovery/Compendium — When Jason rides a Maibatsu Sanchez, the UI shows the player has found a new livery for it, suggesting a vehicle compendium system.

Hacking — Lucia carries hacking tools (Tracker Jammer, Immobilizer Bypass, USB Drive, Auto Dialer), aligning with Tom Henderson's earlier report about a female hacker protagonist.

Witness System and Police Recognition — During the Hank's Waffles robbery, text under the wanted level stars reads "Full Description," meaning witnesses have a full description of you. When Lucia enters a police vehicle, it changes from "No Vehicle Description" to "Full Vehicle Description." A tip reads: "Any vehicle you are seen entering will be known by the Law." Jason is seen trying to prevent customers with yellow icons above their heads from calling cops or running away — when a female NPC's icon starts flickering and turns red, she runs.

Pragmatic Cool/Chaotic & Romantic Cool/Chaotic — These are mentioned in the events list alongside "Radio Song/Riding Pillion," suggesting a morality or style system.

Store Banning — Events show players can get banned from certain stores (Supermarket, Quickshop, Uncle Jack's Liquor) as a consequence of prior actions, similar to RDR2's system where stores become inaccessible after shootouts.

New Features

Improved AI System

Enemy AI — Enemies now shoot when you turn your back to them. Police adjust their stance depending on cover height, lower their position when reloading, and keep shooting while moving laterally. Police raise guns over higher objects like cars.

NPC Behavior — NPCs no longer walk as single pedestrians but travel and converse in groups (like RDR2). NPCs are seen entering buildings as the player exits. NPCs stand and drink near bars. Some NPCs sit on the ground, with animations like "Sit_Ground_Smoke." NPCs react to events around them — when cops arrive at Hank's Waffles, an NPC says "Jesus, finally." Attacked NPCs run with phones in hand.

Partner AI — Lucia follows Dre (not just Jason) in the nightclub, suggesting the AI knows where to go without tracking only the player character. Lucia automatically turns around when shot.

Police System

A new police system includes "Time Until Cops Dispatch" when committing crimes. At Hank's Waffles, police wait for the player to come out rather than rushing in. Players can surrender to police during robberies. A CCTV Detection Meter exists, suggesting security cameras play a role in wanted level and stealth.

Other Confirmed Features

Ability to restrain NPCs (Lucia uses zipties in the Hank's Waffles clip). Loot vehicles (a prompt reads "Examine - Stranger SUV"). Buy gumballs from gumball machines. Character clothes become dirty. Hair and Facial Hair growth system (Jason appears with varying hair lengths and beard states across clips, suggesting RDR2-style growth or at minimum a deeper barber system). Eating and drinking from inventory (Wine, Soda, and Fruit seen added to inventory at a gas station). Smoking (cigarette icon visible in weapon wheel). Playing without the minimap (on-screen waypoints and map icons suggest this is possible; the minimap appears when Jason gets on a bike). Car GPS/waypoints visible on dashboard in first-person view. Attention to Detail

The leaked footage reveals an extraordinary level of environmental and behavioral detail:

Raccoons rummage through trash cans and steal food bags (three separate world events for this). Light shines through Lucia's ear cartilage via subsurface scattering (carried over from RDR2). Interiors are highly detailed — the Hank's Waffles diner has cups on and behind the counter, knife supports, soda and coffee machines with coffee pots, sinks with ingredient storage, toppings and essences, paper towel holders, waffle makers, cleaning bags, and cups on the floor.

Jason presses the brakes before starting a motorcycle, and his wrist bracelets move independently. Groups take selfies at Ocean Beach. Wind behaves realistically near the shore. Pool chairs at the motel are destroyed and the water is swampy. Scuff marks are visible on carpet in the pawn shop. Water particles float when shot, and lily pads react to waves. Sheriffs in the passenger seat look out their side windows to check for cross traffic. Birds stand on power lines. An under-construction bridge is visible. Cops struggle to stand after being shot, avoiding pressure on injured body parts. Bullets scratch through vehicles creating sparks. Dead leaves accumulate on the ground under trees. The nighttime lighting creates realistic orange tints on roads with bright light spots and accurate reflections. NPCs eat hamburgers. For the first time in a GTA game, stores have two attendants. Audio

Radio Soundtrack

Songs heard in the leaks are mostly GTA V and Online placeholders, with the exception of "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple (not previously featured in the series). The Hank's Waffles robbery uses a Diamond Casino Heist soundtrack with added synths.

Placeholder tracks identified across clips span stations including iFruit, Channel X, The Lab, Blonded LS, LS Rock Radio, Kult FM, Music Locker Radio, and more.

Sound Design

Weapons sound louder and punchier, more similar to GTA IV than V. Body impacts generate audio events — Lucia bumping into a car while running creates a hit sound (previously you had to attack a vehicle for it to register). Ragdoll impacts produce realistic heavy sounds. Car doors sound more authentic and vary by vehicle. Police sirens echo off scenery realistically. Shipping containers produce accurate reverb when opened. Environmental audio includes seagulls and pedestrian chatter at Vice Beach.

Metromover — A metromover transit system is visible in one clip, inspired by the Miami Metromover. The Vice City Metro Mule is a new transit brand.

The earliest known build is a PDF screenshot at version v270.0 (estimated 2019-2020). From March 2021 (v400.0.17) through September 2022 (v542.0), the version numbers climbed through the 400s and 500s. Development appeared to halt during the 2021-2022 holiday period, with the same v470.0 version appearing on December 17, 2021, and January 11, 2022.

Several testbed demos were recorded on older builds (v504.0 used on May 20, 2022; v510.0 on June 14; v528.0 on August 11; v533.0 on September 13) — these were likely demonstrations or bug reproductions rather than rollbacks.

The latest known build is v636.0, dated September 2023, seen in the December 2023 devkit leak.

State of the Game

Analysis of video metadata reveals three executable types were used during recording:

  • game_win64_bankrelease.exe — A debug build aiming to be "feature complete" (core gameplay features all present and playable)
  • game_win64_beta.exe — Adds extra functionality, aiming for "content complete" (all game content present but possibly visually unrefined with bugs)
  • game_win64_debug.exe — Standard debug build

The progression from bankrelease to beta suggests the game was moving from feature-complete to content-complete status during the September 2022 recording period. For comparison, Final Fantasy XVI announced content-complete status in June 2022 and launched June 2023.


The Python Leak

Leaked alongside the September 2022 footage but largely overlooked: a Python file related to the game's menu system. A comment in the code reads: #americas is purple background with white text. The hex color referenced is #800080 (purple), suggesting one of the main color schemes for GTA VI's menu may be purple and white. This Python file was later found in the GTA V source code leak on December 25, 2023.

Three significant events occurred in December 2023:

December 2nd Devkit Footage

A person associated with Aaron Garbut (Rockstar co-studio head) recorded video of GTA VI running on a PS5 devkit in Garbut's home office, showing a brief glimpse of downtown Vice City. Community analysis determined the build was version 636, running in Performance Mode (though this may have been for development only). The footage was actually captured in September 2023.

The individual who recorded it made additional claims about the game that the GTA VI analysis team deemed questionable and invalid, so those claims were not included to avoid spreading misinformation.

January 1st, 2025 Leak

After a year of silence from Rockstar, a Reddit user posted 2 videos and a picture from inside Rockstar San Diego. EXIF metadata shows the footage was captured on June 22, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic (explaining the empty office as employees worked remotely).

The leak included: one video featuring an Xbox One X devkit labeled "SAND" with the IP range of Rockstar San Diego (matching the GTA V source code), another showing a monitor displaying a Red Dead Redemption 2 loading screen with a debug bar, and an image showing GTA VI footage on a monitor — Lucia in an environment surrounded by trees, Quonset huts, containers, a silage bunker, and construction equipment. Based on the June 2021 date, the build is likely around v420 (matching leaked footage from a similar timeframe).

The exact location is unknown but appears to be an unfinished area with bugs like water caustics appearing on the ground.
